Majda Kurnik 1920–1967

The permanent exhibition presents some of the most important works by Majda Kurnik, the first academic painter from the Šaleška Valley. The works on display attempt to shed as much light as possible on her artistic and personal image. In addition to the artist’s paintings, both rooms are furnished with a museum installation of furniture from her life. Each drawing, sketch or painting is painted or drawn with energy and imbued with the spirit of the sitter, bringing us closer to the unerring quality of her intuitive representation. Throughout her work, she was committed to sincere intimacy, torn between reality and illusion, between waking and dreaming, between happiness and nightmare. She painted with broad, bold strokes and rough layers of colour. The last phase of her cosmic abstraction is a kind of testament.
